Why a supplement is not medication

A medicine has to prove, before it is sold, that it works and that it is safe for its stated purpose. Regulators review the trial data and grant approval, and the claims on the box are limited to what that data supports.

A dietary supplement does not go through that. It is notified rather than approved. The manufacturer is responsible for its own safety and labelling, and regulators act mainly after a problem appears. That is why no supplement can legally claim to treat a disease — not because the claim is forbidden by convention, but because nothing has been proven.

What “FDA-registered facility” means. It means the premises are on a list. It does not mean the product was reviewed, tested or endorsed. Those are entirely different things, and the phrasing is doing a lot of work on many sales pages.

In most categories the gap between a supplement and a medicine costs someone money and nothing more. In blood sugar it can cost considerably more than that.

Two ways it goes wrong. Someone reduces or stops their prescribed medication because a supplement seemed to be working, and their glucose climbs back unchecked — sometimes over weeks, without obvious symptoms, doing damage. Or someone adds a supplement that lowers blood sugar on top of medication that does the same, and it goes too far in the other direction.

Both are avoidable with one conversation. Neither is avoidable by reading a website, including this one.
